Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom, and Robert Lynn founded DHL in 1969. With the first letters of each of their last names combined, the company name became DHL. Prior to being a co-founder of DHL, Larry Hillblom was a student at the University of California, Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law in the latter part of the 1960s. While studying, Mr. Hillblom applied to work as a courier for Michael’s, Poe & Associates (MPA), an insurance company. He was accepted and began picking up packages between Los Angeles International Airport and Oakland International Airport. After graduating, he contacted Robert Lynn and Adrian Dalsey (MPA’s salesman) for a meeting. In that meeting, they discussed expanding the courier business to cater to other different types of businesses. They started offering and expanding their services between Honolulu, Hawaii and San Francisco, California for their first client, Seatrain Lines.

By the 1970s, DHL grew and became one of the largest delivery company. During that time, DHL was the only logistics company to offer an overnight delivery service. Later in the late 1990s, a German postal service (Deutsche Post) began purchasing shares of DHL. In 2001, they acquired enough to be considered the “controlling interest”. By 2002, Deutsche Post acquired all remaining DHL stock and merged it with its “express division”. Today, DHL is a brand under Deutsche Post and is incorporated in their various business units. Business units include DHL Freight, DHL Global Mail, and DHL Global Forwarding to just mention a few.

Since Deutsche Post’s DHL has expanded to offer its products and services globally, DHL has also opened headquarters around the globe. DHL headquarters can be found in the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Hong Kong to just name a few. DHL Express’s global headquarters is located in Bonn, Germany together with Deutsche Post.

Serving clients worldwide, DHL stays connected and gives back to the environment and the global community. As part of DHL’s corporate responsibility, DHL’s focuses on a “consistent balance between ecology, economy, and society” through their “living responsibility” initiative. This initiative is categorized into three programs. These three DHL programs are “GoGreen”, “GoHelp”, and “GoTeach”. With their GoGreen program, their mission and goal is to “achieve zero emissions by 2050”. This program focuses on transparency, the off-setting of emissions, and optimizing environmental footprint.

DHL’s GoHelp program partners with the United Nations by providing logistics to aid in disaster relief in areas around the world who have been destroyed by natural disasters. They also offer support through their “Disaster Response Teams (DRTs)” to help handle and distribute relief goods.

Their GoTeach program offers “future opportunities” for “young people”. In collaboration with two partners, DHL helps children and young people to learn and develop new skills for long-term success.
