Because of this, it laid the foundation and association of the business name as Barclays. During the remainder of the 1700s, Barclays was commonly referred to or known as “Barclay, Bevan and Bening”. John Tritton became a partner (through a marriage with a Barclay) in 1785. With this addition, they were then known as “Barclay, Bevan, Bening and Tritton”.

In the late 1800s, several of London’s financial institutions joined to become one bank, Barclays and Co. To mention, Gurney’s bank and Backhouse’s bank were some of the banking institutions included in this joint venture. Throughout time, Barclays grew and expanded offering its products and services nationally. Beginning in 1985, Barclays became known as Barclays PLC. The first ATM (or cash dispenser) was introduced and launched by Barclays in the 1960s. Later, the first debit card was also introduced and deployed by Barclays in 1987.

Tremendous growth continued for the company including a number of valuable acquisitions. Barclays acquired Provincial Bank, British Linen Bank, and Mercantile Credit to just name a few. Acquisition of these companies began in 1918, 1919, and 1975, respectively. Additionally, in 2008, Barclays also attained Lehman Brothers.

In the 1980s, Barclays expanded its operations to the United States to offer commercial credit. To mention, Barclays sold their Bank of California to later purchased Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors and combined it with BZW Investment Management. Through this, Barclays Global Investors was created in 1996.

Their areas of environmental and humanitarian support focus on a wide range of topics and areas. Areas and topics include innovations in sustainability and economic development and growth. They address concerns that include deforestation, modern slavery, and corruption to just mention a few.

In line with its commitment to support environmental responsibility, Barclays has launched an initiative to finance and develop renewable energy sources. They have also taken responsibility by “reducing” their “carbon footprint” within their own “operations and supply chain,” under Barclays’ Environment Stewardship program.
